Every castle in Ireland has a story to tell, and Clough Oughter Castle in County Cavan is no different! In what was historically known as the kingdom of Breifne, this castle saw ownership being passed and fought over for centuries by two main clans, the O’Rourkes and the O’Reillys. During these feuds, the castle also often filled the role of a prison or a fortress. It finally fell to cannon fire from enemies in the 17th century, and was never rebuilt.
